More junior students generally focus on behind the scenes work, while those further along in their studies take center stage. When speaking to the students, it becomes clear that, while their projects come directly from their coursework, the Arts Month events are more than just another assignment. Design Week and the Hilton Anatole exhibit are just the latest examples of how the school helps students turn their passion into a profession, if they so choose. Creative individuals are uniquely positioned to make a difference by offering innovative perspectives and solutions to real-world issues. At ArtCenter College of Design, we believe a comprehensive art and design education is the foundation for success. Traditionally, we celebrate the achievements of our graduating students through on-campus exhibitions each spring.

Our visionary approach is based on the College’s conservatory-like approach to teaching and learning; a desire for rich, intercultural and transdisciplinary dialogue; and a mandate to provide students innovative learning and making spaces. Each student in the photography program has a different area of concentration, providing a variety of perspectives for exhibits. Another student, Teresa Jackson, candidly photographs Black men and young boys to combat stereotyping. The Arts Month events are, to Jackson, a way the school advocates for students while helping them get their work in front of key stakeholders. “I think…art is a really important part of our community and our wellbeing overall… Research shows that…[whether] you’re a consumer of art or you’re an artist, there’s the opportunity to have a positive impact,” she says.

Design Week kicks off Monday, April 22, with the Digital Art and Design Showcase at the college’s Brookhaven Campus. Anyone interested in attending the Design Week events can find more information on them, including locations, dates, and times, here. ArtCenter has taught me that creative inspiration arises from a process of perpetual observation, critical inquiry and fearless experimentation. If you're looking to pursue a creative path but not sure where to start, you’re in the right place. Design and develop vehicles (including cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats and aircraft) and transportation systems of the future. Apply human-centered design to creating innovative consumer products, from the highly functional to the highly whimsical to the highly sustainable. Master the art of creating resonant photographic images for a world with an insatiable need to be informed and engaged by visual storytelling.

While most of Design Week’s events will be held on Dallas College campuses and free to the public, the Future of Fashion Design Showcase will be a ticketed event hosted at On the Levee in the Design District. Emmanuel Tobias, the Dallas College faculty member who oversees the show, has helped in its evolution since he joined the school five years ago. “The biggest thing, and what Dallas College does overall, is provide opportunity for people.

The Student Exhibition is a celebration of the artists and a way for the community to see and buy their hard work. Work from all majors will be shown throughout four floors of the main campus building at 17 Fountain St. NW. This exhibition highlights the resilience and flexibility of our graduates.

In 2021, the City of Los Angeles honored Vargas by naming September 8 Robert Vargas Day, in recognition of his contributions to the cultural life of the city, to the arts and as a leading creative force. Then last year, he was honored again by the City of Los Angeles, which designated the intersection of First Street and State Street as Robert Vargas Square. He recently completed a 150-foot-tall mural of Los Angeles Dodger Shohei Ohtani on the outer wall of The Miyako Hotel’s flagship Little Tokyo hotel in Downtown L.A.

NiEtta Reynolds, another student of Hornbuckle’s, hopes to use her photography to stimulate conversations around mental health. “Being in the class is actually giving me…visual representation… It’s putting me in a position for people to ask me about my work,” she says.
